Giving Tree's Choices & Considerations
#1 ValleyLab Force FX
Our top recommendation is the ValleyLab Force FX/FXC. This electrosurgical generator has been the primary surgical workhorse for the past decade. Due to its widespread use, it is easily sourced, affordable, serviceable, and reliable. Most surgeons are familiar with this device, as it is likely the most widely used electrosurgical generator. The FX and FXC models are essentially the same, with the FXC featuring a harmonic function that is rarely used.
Ensure you have a reusable grounding pad, a reusable cautery tip, and a power conditioner for the machine. Though slightly more expensive, these reusable electrodes are rated for 400 autoclave cycles in the US, and we have seen them last up to 500 or even 1,000 cycles overseas. In situations with limited supply shipments, having durable, reusable accessories can be lifesaving.
#2 Conmed Hyfrecator 2000
The Hyfrecator 2000 is tied with the ValleyLab Force FX for small office and clinical situations. This small office cautery device is common, reliable, and has been a primary care workhorse for many years. While not suited for the operating room, it is a powerful tool for minor procedures.
You will need to purchase the disposable electrodes separately. Notably, the settings can go up to 35 W on high power with bipolar capability. Some electrodes are autoclavable, and creative methods can be used overseas with UV sterilizers.
#3 Bovie A2350
For brand-new devices, we recommend the Bovie A2350. Bovie is a trusted and reliable brand with a long history in making cautery devices. In terms of buying new, it offers the best price and performance. While we mainly receive and donate used ValleyLab Force devices and typically purchase Hyfrecator 2000 units, a brand-new Bovie system ranges from $5,000 to $8,000. However, the reason we rank this lower is due to the more limited repair and serviceability compared to the easily repairable and serviceable ValleyLab units.
By selecting the right equipment and ensuring proper maintenance, we aim to provide reliable and efficient surgical tools for mission hospitals, balancing cost and performance for optimal outcomes.
