Giving Tree's Choices & Considerations

#1 US Lifepak 20E

For US hospitals, the Lifepak 20E is your go-to defibrillator. It’s the most affordable and easy to maintain, making it a practical choice for most healthcare settings. The Zoll R series, however, is best avoided due to its proprietary battery modifications, which make replacements and refurbishments nearly impossible.

The Lifepak 15, while offering the same features and performance as its predecessors, comes with a steeper price tag for a color monitor and a sleeker design. Stick with the 20E for a balance of cost and reliability.

#2 Missions Zoll M Series

When it comes to mission hospitals, the Zoll M is the best value for performance. It might lack a bit in ergonomics, but its reliability and proven performance make up fo

r it. Although hard paddles might be an extra expense, they are worth the investment. Regular preventive maintenance (PM) and keeping batteries up-to-date are crucial, and it must be plugged in at all times to ensure readiness. Avoid the Zoll R series due to its problematic proprietary battery system.

Our number one pick is the Zoll M defibrillator, known for its cost-effectiveness and abundance of units available. We purchase and provide these units at a slightly higher price to ensure thorough inspection, battery replacement, and biomedical testing, as these will be needed in emergency situations without fail. Reusable defibrillation electrodes (paddles) are also recommended.

#3 Legacy Lifepak 12 Heartstart MRx

The Lifepak 12 is a classic and the most widely recognized defibrillator on the market. It’s reliable, with many available parts and service options. However, these units are often older, so it's essential to inspect the batteries regularly and ensure overall biomedical checks. Despite their age, they are inexpensive and a must-have for any clinic or hospital.

The Lifepak 15 has replaced the Lifepak 12, offering the same features and performance with added benefits like a color monitor and a sleek design. However, it comes at a significantly higher cost.

The Philips Heartstart MRx is another decent option. While less common than the other main brands, it can often be found at good prices. However, be aware of the few recalls issued for this model and ensure any device you acquire is not affected by those recalls.

By selecting the right defibrillator and maintaining it properly, you can ensure reliable and effective emergency care in both US and mission hospitals.
